The Soča Trail near the Great Soča Gorge
Great Soča Gorge and the Soča Trail: A Riverside Day Trip from Bovec
The Great Soča Gorge is one of the most photographed places in the Soča Valley. Yet the best way to appreciate this part of Slovenia is to spend time beside the river, rather than make a single sightseeing stop. A walk from the Small Soča Gorge to the Great Gorge brings you close to the changing landscape of the upper valley.

Start with the Small Soča Gorge
Near the village of Soča, the river has carved a gorge that is approximately 100 metres long. At its narrowest point, it is just one metre wide. You can see the Small Soča Gorge (Mala korita Soče) from the stone bridge, where the water flows between close-set rock walls.
The gorge is upstream from the Great Soča Gorge. If you are travelling by car, there is a parking area off the Bovec–Vršič road at the turn for Vrsnik and Vas na Skali.

Walk Between the Gorges on the Soča Trail
From the Small Gorge, follow the marked Soča Trail downstream toward Bovec. This riverside route passes through woods and meadows, with footbridges and views of the Soča along the way. The walk between the gorges is a chance to enjoy the river at a slower pace before reaching its most dramatic canyon.
Wear suitable hiking shoes, carry water and allow extra time after rain, when parts of the path may be slippery. The full Soča Trail is 25 kilometres long, but you can walk just the section that interests you. For route information and current conditions, consult Triglav National Park’s Soča Trail guide.

Discover the Great Soča Gorge
The Great Soča Gorge (Velika korita Soče) is approximately 750 metres long and 15 metres deep. Its limestone walls narrow to only a few metres apart in places, with clear green pools far below.
You can view the gorge from selected points along a marked forest path and visit the area where the river leaves the canyon near the Lepena Valley turn. The gorge is roughly 11 kilometres from Bovec. There is no path through the gorge itself, so stay on the marked route and keep back from exposed edges.

Visit by Bus from Bovec
When the seasonal Bovec–Trenta/Vršič bus is operating, you can make this a one-way hike without bringing a car. Take the bus from Bovec to the Soča stop, walk to the Small Soča Gorge and follow the trail downstream to the Great Gorge. After your visit, walk to the Lepena junction stop for the bus back to Bovec.
Check the bus timetable for your travel date before setting out, including the last suitable return service. Neither bus stop is at a gorge viewpoint, so leave enough time for the walks to and from the stops.

Expect Company at This Must See Slovenian Sight in the Soča Valley
The Great Soča Gorge is a must-see natural attraction, which means its best-known viewpoints can be crowded in July and August. If you are hoping for a quiet moment by the river, a midday visit in peak summer may feel busier than the photographs suggest.
Consider visiting in June or September, or come early in the morning or later in the afternoon. You can also continue along the trail beyond the main viewpoint: the river offers more to enjoy than one photo stop.

Make Time for More of the Soča Valley
The Small and Great Soča Gorges are two highlights of the long-distance Soča Trail, which follows the river from its source toward Bovec. Along the route, you will encounter footbridges, varied riverside scenery and other places of interest in the Trenta Valley. Whether you walk for an hour or make a day of it, there is much more to discover here than the Great Gorge alone.
